Opened in 1928, the Thebarton Theatre is an iconic performance venue in Adelaide.
Tasked with carrying out the necessary transformation, JPE Design Studio sought to adapt the building to the requirements of today’s audiences while preserving the site’s heritage, identity and charm. To achieve this, a new contrasting and contemporary two-storey entrance pavilion was created.

Reorganising the reception areas and circulation routes within the building, while facilitating access for people with reduced mobility in particular, the extension is clad in an envelope of 200 m2 of PIGMENTO® red Flat lock panels.
Engaging with the ochre brickwork and original ironwork, the colour and aesthetic naturally extend the materiality of the century-old theatre, offering a contemporary expression open to the general public and designed to support the cultural development of the site.
