Inspiring roofs - Baramati Bus Station (India)

In a country building at the pace India is today, a bus station says a lot about where a town is heading. In Baramati, architects Sunil Patil & Associates Pvt Ltd took an everyday transit stop and turned it into a landmark, with a sweeping standing seam zinc roof from VMZINC that gives the whole complex the warm, familiar feel of a large house.

Technique: VMZINC Standing seam

Surface aspect: QUARTZ-ZINC

Think about who passes through a bus station on any given morning. Students on their way to college, families visiting relatives in nearby villages, farmers and traders heading to market. In a town like Baramati, the bus station is not just a building. It is where the town meets the rest of the region, and the architects designed it with exactly that in mind.

A change of era

A change of era

Thirty years ago, a project like this would probably have been treated as a purely practical job: a plain terminal built to move passengers from one bus to the next, and nothing more. Sunil Patil & Associates saw it differently. They wanted the station to be a place people actually enjoy spending time in, a landmark in the life of a small town of around 60,000 people, and a quiet sign of a country that is investing seriously in its public infrastructure.

The buildings are arranged around a central space, set back from the noise and traffic of the road. Passengers gather here much as people have always gathered in the village square, the social heart of so many Indian towns. Overhead, a large roof keeps out the monsoon rain and the summer sun, frames an open patio in the middle, and gives the station the presence of a civic monument.

From a distance, the complex looks like one big house, and that is no accident. Instead of a hard, functional terminal, travellers find a calm place to wait, catch up with friends or simply rest before their journey. The roof is what makes this possible. It is generous, protective and easy to recognise on the skyline, which turns the station into a natural meeting point for the town.

VMZINC Standing seam: a zinc roof that flows

VMZINC Standing seam: a zinc roof that flows

Why zinc? Above all, because it bends. The malleability of titanium zinc and the way it takes on soft, organic shapes made it the obvious choice for a roof built around curves. VMZINC Standing seam is laid on a metal structure raised around ten metres above the ground, and every part of the roof uses the same material, right down to the curved bull nose and the wide zinc soffit. The result is one continuous skin of architectural zinc that wraps from the top of the roof to its underside, so it looks just as refined from the square below as it does from the street.

Standing seam zinc roofing is well suited to large spans and complex geometry, which is why architects so often choose it for public buildings. Built for everyday use

Built for everyday use

A bus station never really closes. It is used hard, every single day, so durability and low maintenance were at the top of the brief. That is where zinc earns its place. Over time it develops a natural protective patina, so the roof keeps performing with very little upkeep, and as a fully recyclable material it is also a sustainable building material with a long service life.

The architects paired zinc with brick, another tough, long-lasting material that handles the wear and tear of crowds and buses at ground level. Brick brings strength below, while the gentle curves of the zinc roof above soften the whole building and make it feel welcoming. Together, they show the long-term benefits of VMZINC for public infrastructure that has to last for decades.
